Porter Gaud Takes 2004 Jimmy Self !

Porter Gaud of Charleston, SC captured the 2004 Jimmy Self High School Invitational after compiling a team total of 612 . The medalist honors went to Christ Church’s Frank Wrenn after he completed play with a two under par effort of 142. The two-day stroke play tournament is being played at Palmetto Hall Plantation on the renowned Arthur Hills Course. As part of a joint effort, the tournament is hosted by Hilton Head High School, sponsored by Greenwood Development, and conducted by the SC Junior Golf Association. The seventeen schools field five player teams and count the four best scores for each round.

For the second day in a row, the wind made the 6,815 yard course play extremely tough. Porter Gaud’s margin of victory was a decisive 13 shots over Green Hope and TL Hanna. Frank Wrenn’s individual effort of back to back 71's had him five shots clear of his nearest competitors, Burton Wood and Vince Hatfield.

The Invitational is named for Jimmy Self, former Chairman-of-the-Board for
Greenwood Development, who died in 1995. Mr. Self served as captain of the golf
team at Clemson in 1964 & 65, was on the South Carolina Golf Association
Board from 1969-71 and was generous to the game of golf in the years that
followed. The parties involved felt this tournament would be a great tribute
to the man that gave so much to golf.
