Dutch Fork Rallies to Take Jimmy Self

Dutch Fork started the final round of the Jimmy Self ten shots back, stunned the field with a final round 295 and took home the championship trophy. The Silver Foxes fired 313-295 for a team total 608, resulting in a 5 stroke win over first round leader and defending champion Glynn Academy. Teams representing North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama played a challenging 6,524 yard Robert Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall. The tournament was sponsored by Greenwood Mills and was hosted by Palmetto Hall. The event was conducted by the South Carolina Junior Golf Association and Greenwood Development.

"We struggled yesterday in the wind and knew we had a lot of ground to make up, but Glynn (Academy) struggled today and left the door open," stated Dutch Fork's coach Mark Giles. The team finished second in the State 4A championship in 2001 and should be a threat for this year's title.

First round leader and SCJGA Player of the Year Kevin Kisner won the individual title, following up his even par 72 first round with a two under par 70 on Saturday. The South Aiken senior's 142 was enough for a three stroke victory. Behind Kisner was Waccamaw's Richard Cox at 145 with rounds of 75 and 70. Other top finishers included Hilton Head's Tim Ferguson, defending champion Thomas Jordon of Glynn Academy, Frank Wrenn of Christ Church and Dutch Fork's Dustin Johnson.

The invitational is named for Jimmy Self, former Chairman-of-the Board for Greenwood Mills, who died tragically in 1996. Mr. Self served as captain of the golf team at Clemson, served on the South Carolina Golf Association Board from 1969-1971, and was very generous to the game in the years that followed. This tournament serves as a great tribute to a man that gave so much to this great game of golf.
