Thoroughbreds Hold off Cavaliers to Claim Jimmy Self

The South Aiken Thoroughbreds posted a final round 317 to win the fourth annual Jimmy Self High School Invitational. The team's 619 total was good enough for a five stroke victory over defending champions Dorman High School of Spartanburg.

Eighteen teams, form Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, competed in the 36 hole event played on the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall. Several of the top 50 ranked juniors in the country were included in the field. The vent was sponsored by Greenwood Mills, hosted by Hilton Head High School and conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association.

DJ Trahan, playing for Dorman, defended his individual title by just one stroke with a two-over-par 146. Trahan, playing in his last Jimmy Self, claimed his fifth Jimmy Self title. In addition to his individual titles the past two years, Trahan claimed team victories with Hilton Head High School in '96 and '97 and Dorman in '98.

The event was highlighted by two hole-in-ones in the first round; one by Alex Hamilton on the third hole and the second by David Elmore on the thirteenth hole. Zack Calhoun recorded the only eagles of the second round. He managed two in his final nine, both coming on the par fives.
