2008 Ford-Picard Championship

Isle of Palms,SC - Dane Derbyshire captured his first SCJGA title with a win in the Picard Junior Classic at Wild Dunes. The Isle of Palms resident fired a 72 that was good enough to hold off the nearest challengers. Torey Johnson repeated as the girls' champion with a round of 78 during the cold, windy, and trying day. The young lady from Moore fired nines of 39-39 to win by 4 shots. The event is named after Mr. Henry Picard who was one of the top SC golfers of all time as he won the Masters tournament, numerous PGA titles, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The second round of the tournament is for juniors only in an individual stroke play event as part of the two day Ford Picard Christmas Classic. Adam Garrett, Kelli Murphy, and Wesley Long all won their respective brackets on a tough day with great competition.

The team of Johnson and Johnson took their 2nd Ford Parent child in three years after finishing the day tied at the top of the leader board. A one hole play off is all it took for the father-daughter team of Terry and Torey to win the select drive - alternate shot tournament. For only the second time in event history, the junior on the winning parent - child team went on to win the individual honors as well. High temperatures never got warmer than 43 degrees and the 30 mph gusts made for cold and tough conditions for the 60 teams on Monday.

The Links Course of Wild Dunes has been the host facility for all 15 years of the championship and has been a vital part of the SCGA family of host golf courses. Polly's Fine Jewelry is back again as the title sponsor for both rounds of the tournament. The first day's festivities are named for seven time SCGA Amateur Champion Frank Ford.
