2007 SCGA Junior Championship

Bryan goes wire to wire at the 49th Junior Championship 2007 Champion - Wesley Bryan

Orangeburg, S.C. - Wesley Bryan had a 1965 quarter in his pocket for his first two rounds, ironically shooting 65 both days. He wanted his good friend to play well on the third round, so he let Brandon Truesdale spend the day marking his ball with the lucky coin. It turns out that Bryan did not need it all as he shot 70 for a final score of 200, 13 under par. "I was swinging free and just felt comfortable over every shot" said the Chapin native. Bryan eclipsed the tournament record by an outstanding 7 shots, no small feat given the 6,701 yard Country Club of Orangeburg layout played to a par of 71.
Jacob Burger, the defending champion, started the day eight shots back. Thanks to an eagle on 11, a birdie on 12, and a dropped shot by Bryan on 14 ; he was able to get within 3 shots of Bryan. Burger also broke the tournament record of 207 that was shared by USC's Allen Koon and the PGA Tour's Lucas Glover. Stephen Behr also continued on his winning ways as he turned in one over par for his final round. A back nine 36 left him 11 shots clear of Blake Kennedy at 223. Behr's one under par total of 212 left him in the top 4 overall for the tournament, a true testament to his abilities.
The field was cut after 36 holes to the low 19 and ties in the 13-14 flight, while the older division will be cut to the low 35 and ties. It took a score of 151 to play the final round in the older bracket while 161qualified for the 13-14 division. In Thursday's final round, players were are also vying for the top eight spots as they will earn their way onto the Georgia-South Carolina Team Matches. The longest running junior matches are scheduled for July 19-20 and will be hosted by the prestigious Sage Valley Golf Club.
The Country Club of Orangeburg was formed in 1921 and has hosted most of the Carolinas' Championships, including the South Carolina Four Ball Championship in 2004. They have also been host to several USGA qualifiers. Tom Green, the course superintendent, did a great job in readying the course after 3 inches of rain and heavy wind hit the Orangeburg area the evening prior to the first round.
