Dale leads the Bobby Chapman
Sean Dale fired an impressive 7 under 64 to take the opening lead in the 13 annual Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational. South Carolina's Jacob Burger is two strokes back at 66 heading into the final round. Nine players were able to break the par barrier of 71 over the Country Club of Spartanburg layout. The talented field struggled with the small and fast greens. Players qualified though local, regional, and national competitions and were invited based on those merits. Five AJGA victories are represented along with 15 state championships, 22 USGA Junior Championship contestants, and 23 other major titles as well. The field boasts an average handicap of below scratch and 11 players are ranked in the top 100 of Golfweek's junior rankings.Dale, a Jacksonville, FL native, shot four under on his opening nine en route to his first round lead. A three putt bogey was his only blemish on the scorecard. " I hit the ball solid all day and left myself below the hole. This course requires precision and I managed to keep the ball out of trouble" said the 2008 non - committed graduate. Burger's short game kept him in the game all day and his first round effort of five under par has him in striking distance of Dale. Spartanburg is well represented as Will Ovenden is one of the talented youngsters under par with a 70.
The tournament is held in honor of the late Robert H. Chapman, Jr. Chapman, a long time member of the Country Club of Spartanburg, was the only man to serve as president of both the South Carolina Golf Association & Carolinas Golf Association. He was an accomplished player and served the USGA in several capacities. In his business life, Chapman was a local and national leader in the textile industry. The tournament also benefits the Spartanburg Foundation and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation.
