Uihlein Wins Bobby Chapman in Thrilling Style

Spartanburg –Peter Uihlein of Brandenton, Florida, finished eagle-birdie giving the crowd gathered for the 2005 Bobby Chapman one of the finest finishes in tournament history. Uihlein’s 36-hole total of 133, 9-under par, gave him a one shot victory over fellow-Floridian, Arnond Vongvanij. The 11th Annual Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational was hosted by the historic Country Club of Spartanburg on their ever-challenging 6,282 yard, par 71 golf course.

Uihlein and Vongvanij – better known as Bank to his fellow competitors – both tied the 18-hole scoring record of 64 in the final round. Uihlein came to the par 5 seventeenth two-back of Vongvanij. Uihlein reached the green in two, then stood over his eagle putt, knowing he Vongvanij was in at 8-under for the tournament. As he pushed his 15-footer towards the hole, it broke ever-so slightly and fell in, leaving the two friend’s tied with one to play for Uihlein. A ten-inch approach at the 18th gave Uihlein a simple birdie putt and the win!

Finishing in third, two back of Uihlein, was South Carolina native Paul Woodbury. Woodbury made a great charge in the final round, firing a 6-under par 65 for the day, finishing the tournament at 6-under par. While Josh Gallman, of nearby Gaffney, South Carolina, was the top Upstate finisher at the event, finishing the competition at 2-over par, 144, tied for 12th.

The 2005 Bobby Chapman field was consisted of 84 participants chosen through some 30 local and national tournament finishes. The group includes five state champions, 12 USGA junior qualifiers, 9 AJGA victories and some 50 other titles. Invitations were extended to the top finishers in tournaments held on courses in South Carolina, south to Florida, north to Connecticut and across the breadth of America to California.

Some notable Bobby Chapman alumni include PGA Tour Members Jonathan Byrd, Lucas Glover, Carl Petterson and D.J. Trahan, as well as Nationwide Tour Players Bill Haas and Kyle Thompson.

The two-day, 36-hole event honors the late Robert H. Chapman, Jr., a national textile industry leader who served the sport as a past-president of the South Carolina Golf Association and the Carolina Golf Association.
