Degenhart Claims Chapman

Jay Degenhart of Savannah, GA posted a six-under-par 138 to win the 4th Annual  Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational. The 36 hole Championship was held on the par 72  Country Club of Spartanburg.

Degenhart, a high school senior, carded rounds of 70 and 68. His final round included five  birdies (2,5,12,15,17) and one bogey (8). He won by two strokes and tied the   tournament record. Degenhart, playing in his second Chapman, felt it was his tournament  when he hit a perfect drive on the fifteenth hole. When asked why, he explained, "Last  year I was in contention until I hooked my drive there. I finished poorly after that. Those  thoughts were gone when my drive found the fairway."

Chad Wilfong of Thomasville, NC finished in second place with a ur-under-par 140.  Although he posted a disappointing one-over-par 36 on the front nine, Wilfong showed  his tournament might on  the final nine. The high school senior, who will be 18 in two  weeks, catapulted up the leader board by posting four birdies down the home stretch.

Matthew Hendrix of Aiken finished alone in third place at 141. His round included four birdies (6,15,16,17) but will be remembered for a double bogey on the second hole. His errant drive found a cedar tree and perched unplayable, three feet above the ground. Hendrix felt the misfortune cost him the title run.

First round leader Rob Beasley of Greensboro, NC posted a final round 75 and finished as one of a half-dozen tied for sixth place. Beasley was in contention most of the day and was Degenhart's strongest threat. Unfortunately, he never got anything going. In a futile fourth down effort, Beasley hooked his drive on the seventeenth. The errant shot led to a double bogey seven and killed any title hopes.

The Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational extended invitations to only  the top finishers from  a select list of events held over the last twelve months.  The 1998 field of 81 players represented 50 titles including eight State Champions, five AJGA titles and twelve other major titles.
