Marino Claims Chapman in Sudden Death

Steve Marino of Fairfax, VA drained a clutch 25 foot birdie putt on the first hole of sudden-death to win the 3rd Annual Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational.

Marino finished regulation play at four-under-par in the 36 hole Championship which was held on the par 72 Country Club of Spartanburg. Michael Maness of Galivants Ferry, SC was on the losing end of the playoff for the second consecutive year.

First round leader, Ben Duncan of Greenville, South Carolina, posted a one under par 34 on the front side and held a one stroke lead starting the final nine.  Duncan made several bogeys, but managed to come to the eighteenth tee one stroke back and needing a birdie for a tie.  Duncan made double bogey six and finished in a tie for fourth.

The 1997 field of 72 players represented 45 titles including seven State Champions (Georgia, Florida, South & North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky), three AJGA titles and twelve other major titles.
