Jeff Spencer started his second round eight shots back from
the leader and came away as the champion of the 2001 Blade. When he totaled
up his card on Wednesday, the Columbia native shot a Blade tournament round
record 65. "I got on a roll and just kept it up" stated Spencer about his
best competitive golf round. He was 7 under par after 13 holes and birdied
the finishing par four 18th hole.
In the girls division Mallory Hetzel and Megan Miller matched two round
totals at 153 and took their games to a three hole playoff. It was Hetzel
who walked away the winner with a par on the par five number two. The
Summerville native shot a first round 76 and follow it up with a second
round 77. She will add to her trophy collection as she was the 2000 girls
11-13 Blade Champion.
Cody Hill of Summerville captured champion honors in the boys 13-14
division. He matched his first round 71 with another even par round on
Wednesday and was five shots ahead of his nearest competitor.
The 36 hole event is hosted by the Thornblade Club and is conducted by the
South Carolina Junior Golf Association. Boys 15-18 played to a yardage of
6574 and a par of 71 and girls 14-18 played 5583 yards. Boys 13-14 played
6173 yards. Nine hole players played as follows: 10-12 boys played a par 37
over 2654 yards, 11-13 girls played a par 36 over 2570 yards, and boys 8-9
and girls 8-10 played to a yardage of 37 over 2045 yards.
