Keith Burns Up The Blade

Greer, SC: Justin Keith posted a final round 70 to build on his first round lead and claim South Carolina Junior Golf Association's "The Blade Junior Golf Classic" by five strokes. The thirty-six hole stroke play event was played at the Thornblade Club, July 27 and 28. The Blade was sponsored by Carolina Inks Limited, New York Life and Don Gardner Architects.
Keith, of Easley, started his round final round with a four stroke lead thanks to a first round 65. The two sub par rounds gave the seventeen-year-old a seven-under-par 135 total. Keith said, "I wanted to make pars and I knew if I did the birdies would come. I didn't really get nervus until the my approach shot on the eighteenth hole."

Emmett Turner of Greenwood was runner-up for the second week in a row. Turner's other second place finish came at the CGA's South Carolina Junior Match Play Championship.

Keith's win was overshadowed by play in the Boys 8-9 bracket. Wesley Bryan of Columbia fired up the crowds by making a double-eagle the sixteenth hole. His shot heard round the course was fueled by the shock that he had just eagled the previous hole. The five-under-par two hole stretch gave the eight-year-old the one stroke he needed to win the age group over William Bradley Ovenden.

Kacy Thompson, who will start at USC next month, claimed the Girl's title. Thompson beat out first round leader Brandi Jackson of Belton with a birdie on the second hole of sudden death. The Furman bound Jackson gave up a five stroke lead that she had built through the first three holes of the final round.

Thornblade, host of the 1997 SCGA Amateur Championship, was a strong drawing card for the junior event. The club went forward with the event despite losing the clubhouse to fire in May. The tournament played on the tragic event by adopting the theme: "Burning it up at the Blade!"

The tournament extended invitations to 72 of the state's top junior players as part of the 140 player field. The field was broken into seven age groups played from different tees on the par 71 course. The 18 hole groups were: Boys 15-18, 6418 yards; Boys 13-14, 6024 yards; and Girls 14-18, 5359 yards. Four 9 hole groups: Boys 10-12 & Girls 11-13, 2410 yards; Boys 8-9 & Girls 8-10, 1810 yards.
