Players Championship

 Final Round Results

 November 10, 2002

Windy conditions welcomed the contestants for the final round of the 2002 SCJGA Players Championship at Hartsville Country Club, November 10.  Familiar names rose to the occassion as they tamed the weather, a challenging field and the difficult 6,621 yard venue.  Zach Siefert fired a final round five under par 67 to win the Boys 15-18 Age Brackett by two strokes over Ben Karns of Gaffney.  In the Girls 14-18 Age Brackett, Lauren Hunt followed up a first round score of one over par 73 with a final round performance of two under 70.  The Players Championship was proudly presented by the Hartsville Junior Golf Foundation and hosted by Hartsville Country Club. Generous sponsors of the Fifth Annual SCJGA tournament included Stingray Powerboats, Kentco, Carolina Bank, and John Newsome's GM Superstore.

In Boys 13-14 action, George Bryan of Columbia shattered Kevin Kisner's four year old record of 145, by firing a two day total four under par 140 with consecutive rounds under par.  In the Girls 11-13 Age Brackett Elizabeth Freeman of Anderson shot a two day total of 85 to win the division by a two stroke margin.  Wesley Bryan and Michael Muscatel both shot a total score of 71 in the Boys 10-12 Age Brackett.  Bryan, a native of Columbia, birdies two of the three hole playoff to capture the title . The Girls 8-10 Age Brackett was won by Maureen Dunnagen who fired a score of 88 for her third SCJGA title.  The Boys 8-9 Age Brackett was captured by Caleb Sturgeon who shot 79 and also won his third straight championship.

The most exciting action of the weekend happened off of the golf course. The Stingray Youth Benefit came to a conclusion thanks to the assistance of two young junior golfers. Mary Chandler Bryan stirred the pot of over 3000 tickets and Chase Epting pulled the winning ticket that awarded a 2002 Stingray Powerboat to a lucky winner. Chances for the boat were offered by Chapter level players all year long in an effort to provide additional funding for SCJGA programs. Kara Fant of the Anderson Chapter managed to coerce her father to purchase some tickets to support junior golf. Daniel Fant now has the tough decision of deciding what Stingray boat will make it into Lake Hartwell.
