Huntersville, NC…North Carolina took an early 21-11 lead after the first day of the 5^th annual Crown Cup Junior Golf Tournament, held at Skybrook Golf Club in Huntersville. The annual tournament, hosted by the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, pits 40 junior golfers from North Carolina versus 40 juniors from South Carolina in a Ryder Cup type format. Today’s portion of the event consisted of four ball matches between the two teams, while the tournament concludes on Sunday with singles matches. South Carolina holds a 4-0 lead in the Crown Cup Golf Tournament rivalry.

Huntersville, NC…North Carolina survived a spectacular Day 2 rally by South Carolina to win the 5^th Annual Crown Cup Junior Golf Tournament Title, 48 ½ to 47 ½. This year’s event was held on Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20, 2002, at Skybrook Golf Club in Huntersville. The annual tournament, hosted by the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, pits forty junior golfers from North Carolina versus forty golfers from South Carolina in Ryder Cup style format. The Tarheels had jumped to a 21-11 lead after the Day 1 Four Ball matches, and had actually climbed to an early 31 ½ to 16 ½ advantage during the Day 2 Singles matches. But South Carolina suddenly came alive and began to take significant bites out of the scoring gap. It wasn’t until the last match of the day, a draw between Cipriano Ayala (SC) and Jay Moore (NC), that North Carolina earned the one point necessary to clinch the tournament and claim the Crown Cup title for only the first time in the five-year history of the event.
