Ervin, Hetzel
Prevail
Mt. Pleasant's Tanner Ervin and Summerville's
Mallory Hetzel prevailed in the final round of the Players Championship,
hosted by Hartsville Country Club. Ervin fired a second round 68 to claim
top honors, while Hetzel's second round 73 was enough for victory in girls
action. The best of South Carolina's junior golfers teed it up in the 4th
annual championship, thanks to sponsorship from Kentco, Stingray
Powerboats, Carolina Bank, and Newsome Automotive.
Ervin opened the tournament with a 2 over par 74, but rebounded in the
second round with an 18-hole tournament record 68. Coming out strong,
Ervin fired a 3-under par 33 on the front side and followed up with a 35
on the back, giving him a 4-under score for the day. His two day total,
142 was two shots better than runner up Adam Dox of Columbia. Dox's two
day total 144 was much like Ervin's, a solid second round effort as he
finished the event at 75,69. Rounding out the top of the field was third
place finisher Dustin
Johnson of Chapin (146) and four players finishing at 147, including first
round leader Kevin Kisner of Aiken, Simpsonville's Zach Siefert, Colin
Floyd of Loris, Richard Cox of Pawley's Island.
Mallory Hetzel took home championship honors in girls 14-18 action as
she fired a two day total 146. The 14-year-old matched her opening round
73 and closed the tournament after rolling in an eight foot birdie putt on
the final hole to shoot a back nine score of 33. That eight foot putt
left Columbia's Erica Battle one shot shy of Hetzel with a second round
72. The future University of South Carolina golfer closed out her final
season with the SCJGA with a win two weeks ago at the Fall Challenge and a
runner-up finish at the Players Championship. First round leader Dinah
Plyler of Chapin finished the event in third, while Laura Crawford of
Lancaster and Lorraine Ballerano of Myrtle Beach rounded out the top five.
In
boys 13-14 play, Luke Hopkins of Greer took the title following his
opening round 71 with a 77 to finish at 148. Runner-up honors went to
Columbia's George Bryan finishing the event at 74,76 for 150, while Cody
Hill of Summerville and Sean Goshert of Conway finished tied at 153 for
third.
In 9-hole boys action, Will Ovenden of Columbia defeated Michael
Muscatell of Lake Wylie on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. Both
players finished the 18-hole event at even par 72, setting a new tourament
record! Finishing one shot back of Ovenden and Muscatell was first round
leader Spencer Cole of Greer. In Boys 8-9 play, Austin Cody of N.
Charleston prevailed as champion with an 18-hole total of 78, three
strokes better than Columbia's Thomas Bradshaw. Rounding out the top
three was Easley's Cameron Lamb who finished the event at 87.
In
9-hole girls play, Rachel Uremovich of Hilton Head fired a two day total
82 to take the title in girls 11-13 action with a demanding nine shot lead
over runner up Taylor Barrett of York. Elizabeth Dannelly of Easley fired
an 18-hole total of 95 (49,46) to finish in first place in girls 8-10.
