SLAM DUNCAN!
Cheraw: Brian Duncan
of Greenville lapped the rest of field with a final round 66 to capture
the SCJGA Cheraw State Park Fall Challenge presented by the South Carolina
Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. The Travelers Rest High
School Senior's seven-under-par 139 performance was decisive. He won the
title by nine strokes despite starting the day three strokes back on the
tough 6610 yard, par 73, layout.
First round leader and home
town boy Matt Bennett of Cheraw posted a final round 78 and finished alone
in second place.
The two-day event was conducted
October 28-29, 2000 on the park's golf course. The sixth annual tournament's
field of 139 consisted of boys and girls ages 8-18 from across the state.
Colby Cobb of Mt. Pleasant claimed the Girls 14-18 title. Her wire-to-wire
win was almost derailed by a late rally by Lorraine Ballerano. Ballarano
finished one stroke back of Cobb's winning 158 score. The duo teamed up
earlier in the month to claim the SCJGA Four-Ball.
Michael
Chappell of Columbia won the Boys 13-14 Division. It was his first victory
and it came on a pair of 76s for a six-over-par 152. Ann Maness of Galivants
Ferry also claimed her first SCJGA title. Her Girls 10-13 win came on rounds
of 42 and 39 for an 81 two day total.
The two nine hole boys brakets
were claimed by bothers Austin and Crawford Reeves of Greenville. Austin
claimed the Boys 10-12 by six strokes after posting a final round two-under-par
34. Crawford won the Boys 8 & 9 division by six strokes as well with
rounds of 40 and 43.
It is worth noting that Duncan
and the Reeves are members of the Thornblade Club. A tribute to Head Professional
Jamie Michala who is retiring from the club later in the year.
