SC
Wins 3rd Consecutive Crown Cup
Charlotte, N.C., October
24, 2000 - The Third Annual Crown Cup Junior Invitational Golf Tournament
was completed on Sunday, October 22nd with the team from South Carolina
capturing their third consecutive Crown Cup title. South Carolina defeated
North Carolina 48 1/2 to 47 1/2 in the closest Crown Cup competition to
date.
The tournament, which was held at Skybrook Golf Club in Huntersville, NC, was punctuated by outstanding play and sportsmanship from both teams. Other highlights from the two day match-play tournament were the appearance of WFNZ Sports Radio 610 AM personalities for a live remote broadcast, an appearance by Charlotte Hornets team mascot, Hugo, and a golf clinic by a Canadian PGA Professional and Tear Drop tour player, Steven Woodard, himself a product of Charlotte junior golf.
The Crown Cup is the brainchild of the Charlotte Regional Sports Commission, which promotes the event and handles all event operations. Begun in 1998, the Crown Cup brings together forty elite junior golfers from North Carolina and pits them against forty elite junior golfers from South Carolina in a Ryder Cup style format. The participants are selected by their respective junior golf associations and placed into age brackets. The boys compete in three groups (11 & Under, 12-13, 14-17), and the girls compete in two groups (13 & Under, 14-17). The Crown Cup alternates between courses in the two states, with the inaugural event being won by South Carolina at the Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville, N.C. and the 1999 Crown Cup also won by South Carolina at the Waterford Golf Club in Rock Hill, S.C.
The 2000 Crown Cup was fortunate to have the support of many top sponsors for this year’s tournament: Bluegrass Ltd., the Charlotte Hornets, Chick-fil-A, Coca-Cola, Drury Inn & Suites, Hops Restaurant, Mulvaney Properties, Nabisco, Paramount’s Carowinds, Pepsi-Cola, Precept Golf, Skybrook Golf Club and WFNZ Sports Radio 610 AM.
